Is marijuana effective in treating anxiety? The answer depends on the frequency of use and the amount of THC in the substance. Marijuana has been reported to have both positive and negative effects on anxiety. Yet, a majority of those effects are negative.

Some individuals find that certain strains, particularly those high in cannabidiol (CBD), can reduce anxiety symptoms by providing a calming effect. CBD interacts with receptors in the brain that regulate fear and anxiety-induced behaviors. However, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), another compound in marijuana, can sometimes worsen anxiety symptoms, especially in high doses or in individuals prone to anxiety disorders. The effects vary widely from person to person, and more research is needed to fully understand marijuana’s therapeutic potential and risks in treating anxiety.

The intelligent use of marijuana to cope with anxiety may offer some short-term benefits, mainly when used infrequently during intense anxiety episodes and with lower THC doses. Well-controlled studies indicate that frequent marijuana use is associated with an increased likelihood of substance use disorders and exacerbates preexisting mental health conditions. THC is a mind-altering neurotransmitter that can have adverse long-term effects, while CBD is the therapeutic and beneficial component of marijuana.

THC binds to cannabinoid receptors in the brain, with varying effects depending on the specific receptors it targets. The response to marijuana can differ among individuals due to variations in brain chemistry. Marijuana and the Brain

THC has been shown to reduce anxiety at lower doses and increase it at higher doses, while CBD consistently decreases anxiety across all doses. A 2017 study in the Journal of Alcohol and Drug Abuse Institute found that 12.5 milligrams or less of THC can lower anxiety, but higher doses can increase it. The problem is that most strains of marijuana contain anywhere from 60-150 milligrams of THC, significantly beyond the minimal 12.5 milligrams therapeutic dose.

Frequent marijuana use can lead to cannabis use disorder, with addiction developing over time-based on the frequency and quantity of use, especially rapidly in adolescents. The best alternative to marijuana for treating anxiety is CBD, as it is non-addictive and provides therapeutic benefits without the risk of habit formation.

Understanding CBD Options

For those transitioning from marijuana to CBD or considering CBD for sleep or anxiety for the first time, it’s essential to understand the different types and to review the potential risks, which include sleepiness, dry mouth, reduced appetite, and fatigue.

Full-Spectrum CBD: Contains all the natural components of the cannabis plant, including THC, CBD, and CBG. This type is less processed and more natural, offering the most significant benefits. Full-spectrum CBD products contain less than 0.3% THC to remain legal in the U.S. However, be aware that they may still result in a positive drug test for THC.

Broad-Spectrum CBD: Similar to full spectrum but without THC. It is more beneficial than CBD isolate because it requires less processing and contains more cannabinoids.

CBD Isolate: Pure CBD with all other cannabinoids removed. It is recommended for first-time users. While it is the least beneficial for treating mental and physical issues compared to other types, it still provides some relief.

If you decide to purchase CBD, be advised that you will not find it on Amazon due to their strict policy on CBD products. You will, however, find CBD Isolate on Amazon, which has been labeled as Hemp Oil. You can, however, purchase any of the types of CBD mentioned above from various other vendors online. When purchasing, it’s essential to look at the bottle label to view the ingredients and their quantity and state that it is third-party lab tested.
