Book Review: Head Strong: How Psychology is Revolutionizing War

Michael D. Matthews’ Head Strong: How Psychology is Revolutionizing War provides in detail how psychological approaches should be applied to the military’s day-to-day activities.  I highly recommend reading this book. From military units to civilian organizations, problems with diversity, stress, and innovation can greatly improve.  From the military perspective, bullets and bombs are no longer the most significant muscles to influence strategic objectives.  It is now bits and bytes!  Applying the lens of human behavior to everything an organization is involved in will significantly improve its success. A neurological approach is critical to succeeding in today’s world, achieving our nation’s goals, and maintaining readiness. The psychological methods applied in the past have positively affected military readiness when considered and have negatively affected military readiness when psychological approaches are left out.   Human behavior is the basis of everything we do. Psychological knowledge will be even more critical in the coming years. Matthew’s insights can provide answers to many of the problems facing our nation today. Both military and civilians organizations are enduring behavioral issues, depression, cultural conflict, diversity and inclusion, sleep and nutrition, and family wellness.  You can find answers in this book to the following questions:

How can we improve diversity and inclusion in an organization?

How do you build more physical and mental resiliency?

How do you train warriors to grow from trauma and failure instead of allowing it to destroy them and reduce organizational resiliency?

How do you build cognitive Dominance?

How do you train families to be more resilient in the face of the day-to-day ugliness of the military?

How do you train warriors to kill for their country and identity those who enjoy it so that they may be removed?

How do we use simulations to improve diversity, emotional control, and cultural awareness?

How do leaders influence the hearts and minds to support your organization?

How do you improve human performance through today’s advances in technology?

How do we modify chemical biology to improve performance?

How do we teach improved ethics and serve as a nation that seeks long-term peace rather than seeking change from destruction?

How do we change political behavior to create a Department of Peace rather than a Department of Defense;  create policies to develop global teams seeking peace rather than seeking to win by destroying things first then trying to fix the destruction they made?
