Book Review: Conceal Reveal: The Space Between Entrepreneurs and the Defense Industry

An intriguing memoir-style book demonstrating how will, desire and passion for fixing flaws in the Defense Industry’s modernization process can serve as a catalyst to keep moving in the face of any trial. This book will bring to light the dysfunction in a system that prevents the rapid delivery of much-needed technology to the sons and daughters fighting our nation’s wars.  In Conceal Reveal: The Space Between Entrepreneurs and the Defense Industry, Julie Willis provides a visualization of the dysfunction of the defense modernization process, her desire to make changes that progress through the lens of providing for the warfighter rather than the lens singled to the desire of making money. She describes her journey in developing the passion, her why, and the establishment of her company DEFIANT Communication.

If you are looking to begin your startup, learn of the importance of human behavior, visualize the effectiveness of healthy connections/relationships, or understand an entrepreneurs’ busy life and unique lifestyle, this book is for you.  Julie’s storytelling of her experiences in this adventure provides examples of how to overcome obstacles through taking a time out, focusing on improving one’s cognitive dominance, and relying on your internal social capital to help you get back up when you are knocked down and accelerate toward success.

While helping the reader visualize how to be successful with a start-up and visualize the corruption and difficult process of getting the warfighter the much-needed technology, Julie describes her thoughts, struggles, solutions, and day-to-day activities.  There is much to be pulled from this narrative as the reader can visualize the importance of human behavior in everything we do.  Visualizing human behavior and how others attack problems and analyze them provides alternative perspectives to reflect on as they solve similar problems.
